    Treehoppers (Hemiptera: Aetalionidae and Membracidae) from Madre de Dios region, Peru

    A list of treehoppers (Aetalionidae and Membracidae) is presented from Madre de Dios region at the southeastern Amazon basin in Peru. The treehopper specimens were collected as by-catch in a survey of the beetles in the Villa Carmen Biological Station and Los Amigos Biological Station. The list comprises 44 species, 31 genera, 16 tribes and 9 subfamilies. Ten genera are new records to Peru. The images of representative specimens of each identified species and genera are provided to facilitate the identification of the local treehopper fauna. Resumen: Se presenta una lista de los membrácidos (Aetalionidae y Membracidae) de la región Madre de Dios, en el sureste de la cuenca Amazónica, en Perú. La lista está basada en especímenes recolectados como captura fortuita en un inventario de escarabajos en las estaciones biológicas Villa Carmen y Los Amigos. La lista incluye 44 especies, 31 géneros, 16 tribus y 9 subfamilias. Diez géneros son nuevos registros para Perú. Se presentan las imágenes de especímenes representativos de cada especie y género para facilitar la identifición de la fauna local de los membrácidos

    Appearance-Related Messages in YouTube Workout Videos: A Content Analysis

    Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals exercised in gyms or attended in-person workout classes. As the pandemic led to shutdowns, many turned to online workout programs to maintain activity levels. The purpose of this analysis was to examine the prevalence of appearance-related messages in 297 popular workout videos on YouTube. Among these videos, 64.3% of the main instructors were women. Instructors were likely to promote beauty ideals, as 100% of the instructors had features consistent with cultural beauty ideals (e.g., clear skin, white teeth, straight hair) and 90.3% had thin or athletic bodies. Additionally, 68.4% of the videos were unlikely to portray instructors who did not have visibly toned or athletic body types, and only 10.1% of the videos included an instructor with features not aligned with Western beauty ideals (e.g., stretch marks, scars, less taunt skin, acne). In addition, 54.5% of the videos depicted instructors wearing tight-fitting workout attire to accentuate various features of the body. In terms of body positivity messaging, 40.1% of the videos included comments related to body appreciation and functionality of the body, as well as underlining the importance of body care (36.0%) and preserving inner positivity (30.3%). Also, only a small percentage of videos in the sample included examples of objectification of the body (6.4%). In contrast to the positive messages emphasizing body appreciation and care, 46.5% of the videos encouraged viewers to work out to lose weight, and 4 videos (1.3%) employed strategies to induce shame or guilt around eating or exercise habits. These findings suggest further examination of the influence of appearance-related messages on social media platforms is warranted

    The MASSIVE Survey - X. Misalignment between Kinematic and Photometric Axes and Intrinsic Shapes of Massive Early-Type Galaxies

    We use spatially resolved two-dimensional stellar velocity maps over a 107"×107"107"\times 107" field of view to investigate the kinematic features of 90 early-type galaxies above stellar mass 1011.5M10^{11.5}M_\odot in the MASSIVE survey. We measure the misalignment angle Ψ\Psi between the kinematic and photometric axes and identify local features such as velocity twists and kinematically distinct components. We find 46% of the sample to be well aligned (Ψ<15\Psi < 15^{\circ}), 33% misaligned, and 21% without detectable rotation (non-rotators). Only 24% of the sample are fast rotators, the majority of which (91%) are aligned, whereas 57% of the slow rotators are misaligned with a nearly flat distribution of Ψ\Psi from 1515^{\circ} to 9090^{\circ}. 11 galaxies have Ψ60\Psi \gtrsim 60^{\circ} and thus exhibit minor-axis ("prolate") rotation in which the rotation is preferentially around the photometric major axis. Kinematic misalignments occur more frequently for lower galaxy spin or denser galaxy environments. Using the observed misalignment and ellipticity distributions, we infer the intrinsic shape distribution of our sample and find that MASSIVE slow rotators are consistent with being mildly triaxial, with mean axis ratios of b/a=0.88b/a=0.88 and c/a=0.65c/a=0.65. In terms of local kinematic features, 51% of the sample exhibit kinematic twists of larger than 2020^{\circ}, and 2 galaxies have kinematically distinct components. The frequency of misalignment and the broad distribution of Ψ\Psi reported here suggest that the most massive early-type galaxies are mildly triaxial, and that formation processes resulting in kinematically misaligned slow rotators such as gas-poor mergers occur frequently in this mass range.Comment: Accepted to MNRA

    A rare case of isolated duodenal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma associated with p53 and ki-67 expression: a case report

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary tumor of the liver worldwide. The incidence of HCC is increasing in North America secondary to rises in chronic liver disease from alcohol abuse and viral hepatitis. HCC most commonly metastasizes hematogenously or through lymphatics to the lungs and regional lymph nodes. Involvement of small bowel is rare and typically results from direct invasion and extension. We examined the molecular features related to this extremely rare case of isolated duodenal metastasis of HCC and noted p53 and Ki-67 positive staining. Here, we review the possible molecular and immunohistochemical studies that may aid definitive diagnosis and the evidence for the management of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma

    PocketNet: A Smaller Neural Network for Medical Image Analysis

    Medical imaging deep learning models are often large and complex, requiring specialized hardware to train and evaluate these models. To address such issues, we propose the PocketNet paradigm to reduce the size of deep learning models by throttling the growth of the number of channels in convolutional neural networks. We demonstrate that, for a range of segmentation and classification tasks, PocketNet architectures produce results comparable to that of conventional neural networks while reducing the number of parameters by multiple orders of magnitude, using up to 90% less GPU memory, and speeding up training times by up to 40%, thereby allowing such models to be trained and deployed in resource-constrained settings
